I’m Bradley, a Senior Programme Manager in the Civil Service. My role involves delivering complex projects that impact the public sector. I’m passionate about problem-solving, collaboration, and driving change. The Civil Service offers diverse opportunities, and I enjoy seeing the tangible impact of my work every day.
The Path That Led Me Here
Before joining the Civil Service, I served in the military, where I developed leadership, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills. My transition wasn’t necessarily planned, but I knew I wanted a career where I could continue to make a difference. Shifting from a structured environment to a more fluid one required adaptability, but my experiences proved invaluable. Like many career changers, I had to redefine my skills in a new context, demonstrating that diverse backgrounds can bring fresh perspectives to government roles.
Getting My Foot in the Door
Landing my first Civil Service role meant learning a whole new application process. Unlike in the military, where career progression is structured, I had to adapt to a competency-based application. I researched the best approach, sought advice, and tailored my responses to highlight my skills. The biggest challenge was translating my experience into clear, relevant examples, but persistence paid off. Understanding how to show key behaviours, strengths, and experience was crucial in securing my role.
A Day in My Life
As a Senior Programme Manager, my day is a mix of strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving. I manage budgets, oversee project delivery, and ensure alignment with government objectives. No two days are the same, some involve high-level meetings, while others focus on risk management, governance, or policy implementation. The variety keeps the role engaging, and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects makes the work rewarding. Civil Service roles at this level require balancing competing priorities while maintaining a clear focus on delivering outcomes that benefit the public sector.
Lessons That’s Shaped My Career
Adaptability is key in the Civil Service. Coming from a structured environment, I had to embrace flexibility and ambiguity. Learning to navigate governance structures, influence decision-making, and communicate effectively has been essential. Building networks and seeking mentorship have also been invaluable in my progression. I’ve learned that career progression isn’t mapped out for you, you have to take control of your own development, seek opportunities, and be proactive in shaping your path. Whether you come from the private sector, the academic world, or the military, resilience and a willingness to learn will take you far.
What I Wish I Knew Earlier
Applying for Civil Service roles requires effort, tailoring applications, understanding the STAR method, and developing strong interview skills are essential. I also wish I had known how important presentation skills are, both verbally and in writing. Many roles, especially in programme and project management, require clear and confident communication. Investing in these areas can make all the difference. No matter your background, being adaptable, open to learning, and proactive about your career will help you thrive in the Civil Service.
